Back (lumbar) pain affects a lot of people today, but many never seek proper treatment attributing it to old age. However there are times when the pain is so unbearable that treatment must be sought. In such cases people often find that there are scores of treatments available to them. Thankfully lumbar pain can be cured.
The older people get, the more their body begins to show signs of wear and tear. A common, ‘I’m getting old’ symptom is lumbar pain. However, what many fail to realize is that, backache isn’t always a phenomenon caused by the aging process. Many times our poor personal habits are the reason for having lumbar pain in the first place.
The way we sit, the way we walk, the way we lift things and pick things up from the floor all have a bearing on our backs. These typical everyday activities can be the source of much of the grief we feel concerning our backs. When we inadvertently put strenuous amounts of pressure on our spinal column, we risk back injuries by straining our muscles, spraining ligaments or even having a slipped disk.
Finding out the cause of your lumbar pain is the first step to getting proper treatment.
The bones in our vertebra help keep our spine supported and us standing tall. A misalignment in these bones often puts pressure on the spine and the nerves associated with the spine. This tends to lead to what is known as a slipped disk. People suffering from this condition often struggle with mundane day-to-day activities such as sitting and walking. Movement will be limited and the pain can oftentimes become so unbearable. It is good to know however that this condition does not lead to paralysis and can be treated.
Natural Lumbar Pain Relief
When you consult your doctor about treatment for slipped vertebral disk, you will often hear the two options: surgical or non-surgical treatment treatments. The doctor should of course talk you through the advantages and disadvantages of both. Non-surgical options are always encouraged because they are generally non-invasive and allow natural lumbar pain relief to be administered. This can come in the form of bed rest, training for correct posture and a strict diet and exercise program to reduce weight that might be putting excess pressure on the back.
Sleeping positions that are more natural and allow back relief include lying on your side with both knees bent. For some people they might require a pillow between their knees for better comfort. In both cases a pillow will be needed to support the head. Another position to try is to lie on a firm mattress facing up and place a pillow under your knees. Lying on the floor with both hips and knees bent at an angle and feet supported by a chair also helps as well. Following any one of the above for two days can provide the relief needed for an injured back. Don’t overdo bed rest lest your muscles become weakened. If you have to have extended bed rest, make sure you get up and walk around for a few minutes every day. Avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time and unnecessary bending.
Straight backed chairs and those offering low back support are good options when buying furniture. They will help you sit correctly. When sitting, proper posture must be maintained, making sure that your knees are kept a bit higher than the hips. If you wish to turn in your chair turn your entire body and don’t just turn your waist.
When driving, don’t sit for prolonged periods of time lest you strain your back. Move the seat forward so you are sitting straight. If you need one, you can use a small pillow or towel to support your lower back.
Waiters, bar attendants, nurses and other professionals who work mostly standing up need to develop a strategy which allows them to rest one foot on an elevated platform (which can be a stool) to avoid putting strain on their back. The alternating of the feet allows some release of pressure from their back periodically. All this should be done while maintaining a good posture of course. Remember to keep ears, shoulders and hips in good form with the stomach tucked in.
Muscle spasms can sometimes occur, and when they do occur, heating pads may just be what you need. Use these pads for 20 to 30 minutes each time. If ice packs are also available they may be used too. If time permits, a massage can also work wonders in relieving lumbar pain.
Sometimes lumbar pain can become so unbearable that pain medication is prescribed. In these cases, muscle relaxant medications as well as anti-inflammatory drugs may be purchased. Your doctor should explain the risks associated with some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that include naproxen sodium. The risks are increased chances of suffering from a stroke or heart attack.
The method meets the basic requirements of the ideal system for recuperation of the spine, namely: the combination of the prolonged extension in conditions of complete relaxation, maintaining, at the same time, the physiological curves of the spine. It is provided by the elastic structure with inclined ribs, whose position changes due to the patient’s weight.
When a patient lies down on the Detensor, the optimally directed traction forces are being formed. These forces strictly depend on the person’s body weight, which results, in total, in relaxation of kinematic system of the spine. Detensor with its edged structure is made of the material which has the unique ability to adjust to the contours of the body. Compressibility and point elasticity of the system are made in a way that the neutral position of the spine, when the patient lies on the side, back or belly, is being achieved, due to the fact that the edges of the Detensor, as support points, are always located under the patient’s body, whereas their surface and basis are designed in strict accordance with the patient’s body weight. And since the traction force depends on the body weight, then it is always individual for every certain person (no matter if the person is healthy or sick). As a results of this important feature, the overexertion of ligaments and muscles is prevented; therefore, the possible traumatization, which could happen when using different devices and systems for the spine traction (for example, “dry” traction: loop of Glisson, tables with loops; underwater extension, etc.) is prevented as well.
This is oftentimes the last option suggested by doctors to get rid of discomfort caused by lumbar pain. The surgeries that may be performed range from minimally invasive to larger and more complex operations like spinal fusion. Surgery can have complications, and generally tends to be referred to if the pain is too severe or the condition is becoming debilitating.
Sometimes you get to work with a physiotherapist after your operation. Your doctor will monitor you and will be with you every step of the way talking you through the healing process. You may be put on an exercise program that looks something like this:
As stated above, if you have been confined to bed rest, make sure you incorporate some sort of movement, don’t just lie in bed the whole day, however do it all under your doctor’s supervision of course.
Thankfully lumbar pain can now be treated successfully. There are now scores of therapies and treatment options that offer lumbar pain relief and allow people to live their lives to the fullest with little to no pain at all.
