Lower back pain maybe triggered by damage when stretching or tearing of a muscle or a tissue connecting muscle to bone (tendon) or ligament (stretching or tearing of ligaments, the fibrous tissue that connects bones and joints). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, fracture, ruptured disk, or arthritis.

Low back (lumbar) pain affects a lot of people today, but many never seek proper treatment attributing it to old age. However there are times when the pain is so unbearable that treatment must be sought. In such cases people often find that there are scores of treatments available to them. Thankfully lumbar pain can be cured.
The older people get, the more their body begins to show signs of wear and tear. A common, ‘I’m getting old’ symptom is lumbar pain. However, what many fail to realize is that, backache isn’t always a phenomenon caused by the aging process. Many times our poor personal habits are the reason for having lumbar pain in the first place.
The way we sit, the way we walk, the way we lift things and pick things up from the floor all have a bearing on our backs. These typical everyday activities can be the source of much of the grief we feel concerning our backs. When we inadvertently put strenuous amounts of pressure on our spinal column, we risk back injuries by straining our muscles, spraining ligaments or even having a slipped disk.

The bones in our vertebra help keep our spine supported and us standing tall. A misalignment in these bones often puts pressure on the spine and the nerves associated with the spine. This tends to lead to what is known as a slipped disk. People suffering from this condition often struggle with mundane day-to-day activities such as sitting and walking. Movement will be limited and the pain can oftentimes become so unbearable. It is good to know however that this condition does not lead to paralysis and can be treated.
Natural Lumbar Pain Relief
When you consult your doctor about treatment for slipped vertebral disk, you will often hear the two options: surgical or non-surgical treatment treatments. The doctor should of course talk you through the advantages and disadvantages of both. When sitting, proper posture must be maintained, making sure that your knees are kept a bit higher than the hips. If you wish to turn in your chair turn your entire body and don’t just turn your waist.
When driving, don’t sit for prolonged periods of time lest you strain your back. Move the seat forward so you are sitting straight. If you need one, you can use a small pillow or towel to support your lower back.
Waiters, bar attendants, nurses and other professionals who work mostly standing up need to develop a strategy which allows them to rest one foot on an elevated platform (which can be a stool) to avoid putting strain on their back. The alternating of the feet allows some release of pressure from their back periodically. All this should be done while maintaining a good posture of course. Remember to keep ears, shoulders and hips in good form with the stomach tucked in.
Muscle spasms can sometimes occur, and when they do occur, heating pads may just be what you need. Use these pads for 20 to 30 minutes each time. If ice packs are also available they may be used too. If time permits, a massage can also work wonders in relieving lumbar pain.
Sometimes lumbar pain can become so unbearable that pain medication is prescribed. In these cases, muscle relaxant medications as well as anti-inflammatory drugs may be purchased. Your doctor should explain the risks associated with some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that include naproxen sodium. The risks are increased chances of suffering from a stroke or heart attack.

As stated above, if you have been confined to bed rest, make sure you incorporate some sort of movement, don’t just lie in bed the whole day, however do it all under your doctor’s supervision of course.
